How Property Monitoring Supports UN Sustainability Goals
It’s easy to frame property monitoring purely as risk and cost — catch the leak, save the repair bill. But there’s a larger picture worth naming honestly, because the same work that protects a property also lines up with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Not as a marketing badge — we make no claim of UN endorsement — but as a genuine description of what preventing avoidable property failures actually does.
Here are the goals our work touches, in the UN’s own terms.
SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation (water-use efficiency)
This is the most direct one. UN Target 6.4 calls to “substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors” and reduce water scarcity by 2030. Undetected leaks are pure waste — freshwater withdrawn, treated, pumped, and then lost into a basement, helping no one.
The scale isn’t trivial. At our own pilot property, a single undetected leak ran 2.4 million litres before anyone noticed — water drawn from the municipal supply and wasted entirely. Multiply that across the thousands of leaks that run quietly in vacant and intermittently-occupied homes every year, and leak prevention becomes a measurable contribution to water-use efficiency. Every leak caught early is freshwater not wasted.
A smart water meter that flags an abnormal flow — and shuts off the supply when a leak is sensed — is, in plain terms, a water-efficiency device. That’s the heart of SDG 6.4.
SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities (reducing disaster losses)
SDG 11’s mission is to make human settlements “inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Most people know it for its housing language, but it contains a target that maps onto our work almost word for word. Target 11.5 calls to “substantially decrease the direct economic losses … caused by disasters, including water-related disasters.” A burst pipe or an overnight flood in an unattended home is precisely the kind of small-scale water-related loss that target is reaching for.
There’s a housing-stock angle too. A home wrecked by an undetected leak or a winter freeze is housing degraded or temporarily lost — often for months of repair. Keeping existing homes sound and habitable, rather than letting them deteriorate through failures no one caught, is a quiet form of resilience. Extending the healthy life of housing that already exists is squarely within what SDG 11 is reaching for — and cutting the direct losses when something does go wrong is the part we do every day.
SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production (preventing waste)
SDG 12 is about using resources well and reducing waste — Target 12.5 aims to “substantially reduce waste generation through prevention.” Catastrophic water and freeze damage is enormously resource-intensive to repair: ripped-out drywall and insulation to landfill, new lumber, new flooring, the carbon and material cost of remediation and rebuild — all of it consumed to undo damage that early detection could have prevented.
Prevention is the most resource-efficient outcome there is. The repair that never has to happen consumes nothing. By turning a potential gut-renovation into a same-day valve shutoff, monitoring avoids not just a bill but a whole chain of material consumption.
SDG 7 — Affordable and Clean Energy (on our roadmap)
We want to be precise here, because this one describes where we’re going, not where we are. UN Target 7.3 calls to “double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.” Vacant and seasonal homes routinely heat and cool empty rooms for weeks — energy spent on no one.
Coordinated HVAC setback for unoccupied periods is on our roadmap, not a service we run today; founding properties will be the first to help us build and calibrate it. When it ships, reducing the energy a property burns while empty will line up directly with SDG 7.3. Until then we’d rather name it as a goal we’re building toward than claim an efficiency contribution we aren’t yet making.
Why we’re careful about how we say this
We’re deliberately framing these as goals our work aligns with and contributes to — not goals we’ve “achieved,” and not a UN affiliation we don’t have. Sustainability language gets overused, and overclaiming would undercut the honesty the rest of this site is built on. The connections we claim are real and specific: a leak prevented is water saved, a flood loss avoided is a direct disaster cost cut, a repair that never happens is materials not consumed. Where a goal describes something we don’t do yet — like energy efficiency — we say so plainly.
For property owners who care about the environmental side of how they operate — and increasingly, for guests who choose accommodations on that basis — it’s worth knowing that protecting a property and reducing its waste footprint turn out to be the same action.
